The best here — by far — is Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider's variety of "It Was A Very Competent Year," a preening, compelling remake a little reminiscent of Epitome's "Intimation" that lets Snider expand his vocal talents into the higher ranges while uneaten true to the breath of the novel.
Most of the songs on "Sin-atra" settle into two understandable categories: those that clinch the refrain that was Sinatra's authentication, and those that bash refrain in the premier, stomp on its debilitated corpse, and then floss with it. Falling fast into the latter section is the opener, "New York, New York" by Strapping Unsophisticated Lad's Devin Townsend. This capture is so aggressively, over-the-top frightful that it sounds like a bad Jack Black kid. The screams, growls and campy ringmaster-like asides will surely have Francis Albert Sinatra spinning in his sedate.
